DSWA Board of Directors

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority Board of Directors consists of seven members who are citizens of the State of Delaware, appointed by the Governor to serve a three year term. All members with the exception of the Chairman of the Board must be confirmed by the Senate.

The Board is a working group, not an advisory group. They serve without pay and are liable for the decisions they make.

The Board has the responsibility and power to set policy and make decisions regarding current operations and programs and planning. The Board is required to adopt a "Statewide Solid Waste Management Plan" to provide the framework for the future direction of the DSWA.

"The Challenges of Growth"

In the business of managing an affluent society’s discarded waste, forward planning becomes very important. If the State’s economy slows down, there is a potential for a decline in total waste that affects DSWA’s revenues. Good planning and data collection can provide early warning signals to allow the Board of Directors to make adjustments in programs.

DSWA continues to demonstrate its planning and implementation effectiveness, initiating an voluntary Curbside Recycling program. The response from the community was better than anticipated, and DSWA staff has been able to satisfy both the demands and growth of the program.

Indeed, the State’s residents (both individual and corporate) have written hundreds of letters praising the program and staff response. Improving our facilities, both from an engineering and also from an aesthetic viewpoint, is an important aspect of DSWA’s public service and outreach program. We have developed customer-friendly programs to reach out to schools, businesses, government officials, and civic and professional associations to explain DSWA’s programs.

Our “all volunteer” Board of Directors take personal interest in DSWA’s mission and provide oversight of our excellent management team. The Board fully supports the continuing efforts of management and staff to explore applicability of new technologies, ideas and programs to our work. The efficiency and quality of our operations reflect that.
