Rep.Gerald Hocker Assists In Locating New Recycle Center

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) would like to thank Representative Gerald Hocker for his assistance in the placement of a new Recycling Drop-off Center in the Ocean View area. The new center was placed down on Friday, September 25 at the Delaware State Park’s Fresh Pond area. The Single-Stream Drop-Off Center is set up to accept items such as narrow-neck plastic bottles, paperboard, aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans, junk mail, newspaper, plastic grocery bags, and brown, green, and clear glass along with a seperate container for corrugated cardboard. The center also has containers to collect used motor oil and used oil filters. In March of 2008 DSWA had been asked to remove the Recycling Drop-Off Center at the Millville Masonic Lodge. Since that time DSWA has been searching for a location to place a new and convenient center to help the residents in the Millville, Bethany Beach, and Ocean View. DSWA adds Recycling Drop-Off Center at Prices Corner DART Park and Ride

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is proud to announce the opening of its newest Recycling Drop-Off Center. The new center was placed on Tuesday, September 15 at the Prices Corner DART Park and Ride located at the intersection of Centreville Road and Old Capitol Trail in Wilmington. The Single-Stream Drop-Off Center is set up to accept items such as narrow-neck plastic bottles, paperboard, aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans, junk mail, newspaper, plastic grocery bags, and brown, green, and clear glass. A container is also set up to collect corrugated cardboard as well as a textile recycling bin.

DSWA held Household Hazardous Waste Event in Newark

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority held its annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection event on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the site of the Old Curtis Paper Mill parking lot located off of Paper Mill Road in Newark. The event was a huge success with almost 1000 Delaware residents showing up to drop off their HHW. DSWA was also able to collect over 12,500 lbs of Electronic Goods from residents for recycling. ATTENTION: DSWA Labor Day Holiday Schedule

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, all curbside and yard waste pick-ups regularly scheduled during the week of September 7 will be delayed by one day. Regular pick-up will resume Monday, September 14.

The following DSWA facilities will be open on Labor Day, Jones Crossroads Landfill from 7:00am-1:00pm and the Rt. 5 Transfer Station from 7:00-11:00am. All other DSWA facilities will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Delaware Solid Waste Authority Annual Poster Contest

Trash Can Dan and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) would like to invite Delaware students grades K-5 to participate in a poster contest. Each year DSWA picks a theme that places emphasis on a current environmental topic for the poster contest. This year students are asked to draw a picture showing this year’s theme, “What are you doing to be Green?” The best posters from each grade will be featured in our new 2010 Calendar, which will be distributed throughout the state to educate others about the importance of recycling, composting, and controlling litter. All winners will be featured in the 2010 Trash Can Dan and the Clean Up Kids Calendar and will receive a copy of the calendar. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place at each grade level. First place will receive a portable DVD player and the Planet Earth DVD collection, second place will receive a $50 Borders Books or Atlantic Book Warehouse gift certificate, and third place will receive a $25 gift certificate to Borders Books or Atlantic Book Warehouse. Winners will be notified prior to America Recycles Day, November 15, 2009. All posters must be drawn on standard 8.5” x 11” white paper (no lined or colored paper will be accepted). Drawings should support the contest theme and should include a title and brief summary of the picture. Pencils, crayons, pens, markers, paints, or chalk may be used (chalk entries should be sprayed to prevent smearing). No three-dimensional entries will be accepted. Nothing may be glued, taped, stapled, or attached to the poster. Entries cannot be laminated and photographs will not be accepted. Each student may submit only one entry and each entry must be the original work of only one student. All entries must clearly state on the back of the poster: student’s name, address, phone number, grade level, school name, title of work, and brief description of design. Entries will be judged on originality, artistic merit, and expression of theme, “What are you doing to be Green?” Entries will not be returned. All entries must be postmarked by October 20, 2009. DSWA Assists Recycling at the 2009 Delaware State Fair

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) assisted with recycling at the Delaware State Fair this year and received 4.68 tons of recyclables. This year the Fair’s Official Beverage Distributor, Coca-Cola, made it quite obvious that they view recycling as a priority. Coca-Cola took the lead in implementing the program to recycle beverage cans and bottles at the Fair. The program resulted in 1.04 tons of mostly plastic narrow-neck bottles being recycled at DSWA’s Milford Transfer Station. M-T Trash also collected and transported 3.64 tons of corrugated cardboard from the Fair to the DSWA’s Milford Transfer Station. DSWA then arranged for the transportation of the recyclables from the Transfer Station to the market end users.

DSWA At The 2009 Delaware State Fair

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is excited to participate once again at the Delaware State Fair, which is being held July 23-August 1 in Harrington. DSWA will be located in the Exhibit Hall located near the Grandstand. At the booth residents can receive information on DSWA’s facilities and recycling programs. Trash Can Dan will also be attending the fair on Healthy Kids’ Day, Tuesday, July 28 and Governor’s Day, Thursday, July 30. DSWA’s booth theme is “What are you doing to be Green?” DSWA hopes that this theme will not only help encourage people attending the fair to recycle as much as possible throughout the fairgrounds but also make recycling a habit in their daily lives. DSWA Independence Day Holiday Schedule

DSWA OPERATES GREEN ENERGY PROJECT AT CHERRY ISLAND LANDFILL

On June 26, 2009 the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) assumed direct operation of the landfill gas plant at the Cherry Island Landfill (CIL). The CIL generates landfill gas through naturally occurring biodegradation of the organics in the landfill. The gas plant collects and transmits the landfill gas to Conectiv's Edgemoor power plant to produce Green Power. The use of the CIL landfill gas to produce Green Power, conserves fossil fuels, reduces emissions and provides a source of renewable energy. The landfill gas generates enough Green Power to provide electricity for about 18,000 households in Delaware annually.

The CIL Green Power Project is owned by DSWA. However, California based Enpower Operations Corporation, has operated the landfill gas plant for the past three years. DSWA is excited about this transition and continuing to provide renewable green energy to generate electricity for Delaware residents. Ninth Annual DSWA Earth Day Festival

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) had its Ninth Annual Earth Day Festival on April 18, 2009 at Killens Pond State Park in Felton. The great weather brought over 3,000 attendees to the event. Children followed their Earth Day passport to various booths in the park to learn more about Earth Day and the environment. Their stops included booths about Composting and the Delaware Envirothon. Children were also able to play on the inflatables, go for a pony ride, or enjoy a sno-cone or cotton candy.

DSWA’s CEO Pasquale S. Canzano wins Engineer of the Year Award

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority is proud to announce that their Chief Executive Officer, Pasquale S. Canzano, P.E., BCEE was selected by the Delaware Engineering Society Past President’s Council as the Engineer of the Year for 2009. Every year this award is given to a candidate “whose sustained and unusual contributions have been made to the public welfare, the advancement of the Engineering Profession, and /or service to humankind.” Mr. Canzano was presented with this award at the Engineer’s Banquet on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington. Mr. Canzano received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University and a Masters of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. During his more than 30 years at DSWA, Mr. Canzano has served in several positions including Chief Engineer, Chief of Engineering and Operations, and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Canzano was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 2007. He is also an active member in several professional organizations such as the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) and the Delaware Association of Professional Engineers (DAPE), which he serves on the board for both organizations. Mr. Canzano demonstrates what an Engineer of the Year should be through his hard work, knowledge, and dedication in both his work at DSWA and his work with other organizations. DSWA’s Chairman of the Board, Mr. Richard Pryor, said, "Speaking for the DSWA Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to say how proud we are of our CEO Pat Canzano on the occasion of his receiving the distinguished award of the Delaware Engineering Society Past President’s Council as the 2009 Delaware 'Engineer of the Year'. To be recognized by his peers across all engineering specialties in Delaware as the most outstanding example of professional competence, responsibility, and public service is a singular honor - one to be treasured by Pat, respected by his peers, and applauded throughout the DSWA organization and community at large. DSWA Celebrates 41,000 Curbside Recycling Customer

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is proud to have reached another milestone within its Curbside Recycling and Yard Waste Collection Program. On February 19, 2009, DSWA signed-up its 41,000 Customer within its Curbside Recycling and Yard Waste Collection program. DSWA’s Curbside Recycling Program began in 2003, and since then DSWA has seen the program grow not only in the number of Delaware Residents who participate but in the service it has been able to provide to its customers. DSWA is proud to be able to provide this service statewide and make it available to any Delaware Resident. Since the start of the program, DSWA has also worked with several towns and cities, including the City of Dover, the Town of Fenwick Island, the Town of Millville and the City of Milford to bring curbside pick-up to its residents. In early 2008 DSWA began using a single-stream recycling system, which means that residents no longer have to sort their recyclables into separate containers. When participants sign-up for the program, they receive a 65-gallon cart on wheels, which residents can use to collect narrow-neck plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans, newspapers, junk mail, corrugated cardboard, paperboard, and clear, brown, and green glass containers. The program currently costs $3.00 per pick-up for residents with pick-ups occurring on a bi-weekly schedule. In 2008 DSWA unveiled its pay-as-you-throw yard waste collection program. This program allows customers to purchase stickers, which are placed on bags or bundles of yard waste, placed at the curb and collected by DSWA. Stickers cost $1 each and are bought in increments of ten. DSWA Assists Two School Districts With Recycling Efforts

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is excited to be assisting two school districts in Sussex County to ‘go green.’ The Woodbridge School District and the Laurel School District have been working with DSWA to bring recycling to some schools in their districts. The Woodbridge School District had a Recycling Drop-off Center placed down on Friday, February 6 at both the Greenwood Elementary School and Woodbridge Middle School. In the Laurel School District, a Recycling Drop-off Center was placed at Laurel High School. The Recycling Drop-off Centers will provide each school with the ability to start a recycling program within their buildings. Woodbridge School District Superintendent, Kevin Carson said, “ We are very excited about the partnership with DSWA, we believe the volume of material coming out of the schools will be significant and we will be able to contribute by not only helping the environment but by significantly reducing our contribution to the landfill.” The Single Stream Drop-Off Centers are set up to accept items such as narrow-neck plastic bottles, paperboard, aluminum, steal and empty aerosol cans, junk mail, newspaper, plastic grocery bags, and brown, green, and clear glass. DSWA Encourages Holiday Recycling

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) would like to remind residents that many of the things you use over the holiday season can be recycled. There are several ways to recycle your Christmas trees. Residents can take their trees to one of the three Delaware landfills for it to be recycled. Another option available to residents is from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). They have opened three free yard waste drop-off sites in New Castle County. The first site is located at DART’s mid-county facility at the southwest corner of Rt. 13 and Rt. 72 near Bear and is open everyday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. unless otherwise posted. The second site is located on Polly Drummond Hill Road directly across from the entrance to the Judge Morris Estate and is open everyday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. unless otherwise posted. The third site is the Brandywine Hundred Community site, which is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. In addition, three state parks will accept Christmas trees this year from December 26 to January 19. These parks are Killens Pond in Kent County, and Trap Pond and Cape Henlopen in Sussex County. This time of year a lot of wrapping paper, holiday cards, and gift boxes get thrown away. If you have our curbside recycling pick-up than, please put all of these items in the 65-gallon cart on wheels provided to you and the items will be recycled. If you are not part of this program, wrapping paper and holiday cards can be taken to one of our Recycling Drop-off Centers. DSWA REMAINS COMMITTED TO RECYCLING

Over the past few months the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), along with other recyclers worldwide have seen a massive collapse in the recycling market. Currently, DSWA is finding it difficult to find markets for the recyclable material that is collected through its Curbside Drop-off Recycling Programs. Rather than receiving funds for recyclable material, DSWA will have to pay to have the materials recycled. This means DSWA could lose millions of dollars, which usually helps to offset some of the costs of operating the programs. DSWA is doing everything it can to sustain the recycling program during this downturn in the market, and will continue to do so. Currently, material is being stockpiled at DSWA’s Delaware Recycling Center (DRC) in New Castle, but has already filled about 75% of its space at the facility. Over the past several weeks DSWA has been meeting with various local, national, and international companies to work out plans to get recyclables removed for minimal cost. DSWA would like to stress to all Delaware residents that they should not stop recycling! DSWA will do everything in its means to have this material recycled, including making payments to the markets when necessary. DSWA Asked To Remove Recycling Drop-Off Center in New Castle County

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) has removed the Recycling Drop-off Center at Salty Sams Restaurant on Rt. 13 near Hares Corner in New Castle. The center was removed Friday, December 19 at the request of the site sponsor. This location is being removed because the restaurant will be closing. DSWA would like to thank Salty Sams for allowing DSWA to have this Drop-off Center at this location. Residents in the New Castle area, who are interested in recycling, can take their recyclables to one of the nearest centers located at the City of New Castle Office on Chestnut Street in New Castle or at the Tybouts Corner Park and Ride off of Rt. 13. DSWA works with the University of Delaware on Recycling Program

This Autumn the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) helped the University of Delaware launch a pilot Single-Stream Recycling Program on the Laird and South Campuses. The University distributed over 2200 smaller recycling bins and over 200 hallway recycling carts to these campuses. They also launched the Game Day Recycling Program with DSWA’s single-stream recycling carts in the parking lots during home games. Just in the first five home games they have collected 19,840 pounds of recyclables. Their parking volunteers pass out one trash bag and one recycling bag to encourage tailgaters to recycle. Then the grounds crew collects the materials and bring them to DSWA’s Recycling Center in New Castle. Drew Knab, Business and Project Analyst, from the Office of the Executive Vice President of the University, said “DSWA was instrumental in guiding us with what to do to begin this program. The University is anxious to expand the recycling program across campus.” The University is expecting to expand this single-stream recycling program across campus in the Fall of 2009. Along with the University’s recycling efforts, DSWA still has four single-stream recycling drop-off centers throughout the campus. Both students on campus and residents in the area are able to bring their recycling to these drop-off centers at no cost. DSWA Celebrates America Recycles Day

The annual America Recycles Day was celebrated November 15. This year members of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s (DSWA) Public Information Group hit the streets to find Delawareans recycling. Residents were thanked for their support of DSWA’s recycling program and given gifts, which included DSWA hats and pens made from recycled money. DSWA was proud to see that Delaware residents are so dedicated to recycling that not even the wind or cold could keep them away from the recycling centers. DSWA maintains over 150 Recycle Drop-off Centers along with a voluntary statewide curbside recycling program serving over 38,000 customers. DSWA is also proud to be able to provide recycling of electronic goods, used motor oil and oil filters to the residents of Delaware.

America Recycles Day is a nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products. Through America Recycles Day, the National Recycling Coalition provides guidance to local communities and raises awareness by educating citizens about the benefits of recycling. DSWA is also an advocate for educating the public on recycling. DSWA visits an average of 2,000 students each month and also gives several tours of its facilities.

Jack has a B.S. degree in Accounting and Finance from St. Francis College and brings 26 years of experience in the private sector as a V.P. of Finance and Administration, controller and consultant. As DSWA’s new CFO, Jack complements DSWA’s Executive Management Team in dealing with the financial challenges facing us.

DSWA partners with New Castle County to open three new Recycling Drop-Off Centers

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is pleased to announce the opening of several new Recycling Single-Stream Drop-Off Centers in New Castle County. DSWA and New Castle County have partnered to open up three new recycling centers. "New Castle County is proud to partner with DSWA to provide these new drop-off recycling locations to our residents," said County Executive Chris Coons. "Working together, we can all make a difference by keeping recyclables out of our landfills," he added. These new recycling centers are located at the Carousel Farms Bark Park at 3700 Limestone Road in Wilmington, the New Castle County Government offices at 87 Reads Way in the Corporate Commons in New Castle, the Brandywine Library at 1300 Foulk Road in Wilmington. Residents may bring items such as narrow-neck plastic bottles, corrugated cardboard, junkmail, newspapers, paperboard, glass containers, aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans, and plastic grocery bags. Rich Von Stetten, DSWA Senior Manager of Statewide Recycling, says; “DSWA is thrilled to work with New Castle County and their commitment to recycling and the environment. DSWA and Dover Downs Hotel & Casino Partnering for Recycling Program

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is embarking on a recycling initiative with one of Delaware’s best-known landmarks, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. The initiative includes the placement of two Single-Stream Recycling Drop-off Centers. The centers were placed down at the facility on Tuesday, September 29. DSWA Senior Manager of Recycling Rich Von Stetten said, “This is extremely exciting to be partnering with Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in this worthwhile recycling effort. Many thanks to Ed Sutor, President and CEO, and Rich Duncan, Director of Facilities at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in facilitating a truly ‘green’ complex.” The containers are located at both the Hotel and the paddock, where they keep the horses during harness racing season. The site’s contracted cleaning staff will collect the recyclables and deposit the items in the recycling containers, which accept paper, cardboard, plastic narrow-neck bottles, glass, and cans. Company officials hope to soon expand the site’s recycling efforts to include both NASCAR races. “Since beginning our recyclable waste collection through DSWA on September 29, our employees have been overloading the indoor receptacles nearly every day,” said Ed Sutor, president and CEO of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. “We are keenly aware that an organization of our size can have a positive impact on the environment by instituting ecologically-friendly practices. Tire Collection Event Being Held at DSWA Rt. 5 Transfer Station

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is proud to be partnering with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Division of Air & Waste Management's Scrap Tire Control and Cleanup Program and Independent Disposal Services (IDS) for a scrap tire collection event at DSWA’s Rt. 5 Transfer Station. This free event will be held on Saturday, October 25 from 7am-2pm at the Transfer Station near Harbeson. During the event Delaware Residents can bring up to 10 passenger or light duty truck tires to the site for recycling. Residents cannot bring larger tires, tires on rims, or bicycle tires to the event. There will also be no collection of tires from a commercial business. Residents will need to show proof of residency at the event with either a driver’s license or utility bill. DSWA Asked to Remove Recycling Drop-Off Center in Newark

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) will be removing the Recycling Drop-off Center at Christiana High School. The center will be removed Friday, September 12 at the request of the site sponsor. DSWA would like to thank the Christina School District for allowing DSWA to have this Drop-Off Center at this location for over 15 years. Recycle Analog TVs through DSWA Electronic Goods Recycling Program

In preparation for the February 2009 switch to digital television, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is encouraging Delawareans, who decide to buy a digital televison and no longer want their old analog television, to recycle them through DSWA’s Electronic Goods Recycling Program rather than throwing them away. DSWA's Electronic Goods Recycling Program allows residents to conveniently drop off their unwanted electronic items for free. DSWA has 24 locations throughout the state for residents to recycle their old electronic goods. The drop-off program is designed to accept electronic goods, telecommunications equipment, toys, radios, televisions, and electroacoustic equipment such as calculators, computers and their parts, keyboards, printers, copiers, cables, phones, fax machines, answering machines, and VCRs. Electronic Goods Drop-Off Events at Best Buy stores

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority, Best Buy stores, and Computer Donation Management will be partnering for Electronic Goods Recycling (EGR) Drop-Off events at your local Best Buy stores. DSWA’s Senior Manager of Recycling, Rich Von Stetten, said, “We are very pleased to make this announcement and work with a national chain as well known as Best Buy.” These events will be from 9 am-1 pm on the following dates: August 23, 2008 at the Best Buy on Rt. 202 in the Concord Mall Plaza, September 13, 2008 at Best Buy on Rt. 13 in Dover, and September 27, 2008 at Best Buy on Churchman’s Road across from the Christiana Hospital. On these days, residents can bring items such as computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, and televisions to be recycled at no cost. Best Buy District Field Support Manager, Michael Higman, said "Since 2001, Best Buy has helped consumers recycle more than 7 million pounds of electronics in a safe and environmentally responsible way.” On these dates Best Buy will be offering a special promotion for those residents that drop off electronic goods. Residents who have items to drop off will receive a coupon good for $5.00 off a $50.00 purchase, $10.00 off a $100.00 purchase, and $25.00 off a $250.00 purchase. DSWA Announces Scholarship Winner

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority is proud to announce that Mr. Nicholas Bradley of Wilmington is the 2008 John “Pat” Healy Scholarship recipient. Mr. Bradley graduated from Salesianum High School and will be attending the University of Delaware, majoring in Environmental Science. While at Salesianum, Mr. Bradley maintained a 3.62 grade point average and was a member of various school related activities such as: National Honor Society, Ecology Club, Stage Crew, and even served as Captain on the Mock Trial Team. The scholarship is an annual award given out to a high school or college student who attends a Delaware college or university and is majoring in either environmental engineering or environmental sciences. The award is given based on academic performance, community or school involvement, and leadership ability. This award is also renewable for three additional years as long as he maintains a 3.0 GPA. DSWA would like to wish Mr. Bradley continued success with his collegiate studies. The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) has been asked to remove the Recycling Drop-off Center at the Sheraton Hotel in the City of Dover located in Kent County. At the request of the site sponsors, the center will be removed July 18. The removal of this center also includes the Electronic Goods Recycling Container; this container will be moved to the Department of Corrections Building in the north parking lot. Governor Minner Appoints New Member to DSWA Board of Directors

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) and our Board of Directors are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Gerard (Jerry) L. Esposito to our Board of Directors. He replaces Ms. Stephanie L. Hansen, whose term had expired. Mr. Esposito comes to the DSWA as the current President of Tidewater Utilities. Formerly, Mr. Esposito worked as the Director of Water Resources at the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Governor Ruth Ann Minner formally offered Mr. Esposito the appointment to the Board position, which the State Senate approved and he accepted on June 26, 2008. DSWA’s Chairman of the Board Richard Pryor said, “On behalf of my colleagues, I am delighted to welcome Jerry Esposito to the Board of Directors of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. Mr. Esposito brings a wealth of relevant experience from the public, the private, and the regulated sectors of the Delaware economy that will enhance the Board’s discharge of its complex responsibilities. We look forward to his contribution and insights as we continue to address Delaware’s need for sustainable public policy and programs to manage solid waste here in Delaware. At the same time, it is with real sadness that we bid adieu to Stephanie Hansen who, after two effective years on the Authority’s Board, decided to step down because of the press of professional responsibilities arising from her work as a Delaware attorney. Stephanie’s calm analytical approach and strong work ethic will be missed, but we wish her well and continued advancement in her career.” The Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s Board of Directors is comprised of seven Delaware residents representing The City of Wilmington and the three counties. With the exception of its Chairman, who serves at the pleasure of the Governor, the Board is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate for three-year terms. Board members serve voluntarily and without pay. Being a Board Member takes a strong commitment given that they serve as a working group, attending meetings, public hearings, workshops, and much more. The Board of Directors sets policies and makes decisions regarding current operations, programs, and planning. The Board is also required to adopt a “Statewide Solid Waste Management Plan” to provide the framework for the future of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. DSWA Announces Electronic Goods and Recycling Workshops

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is pleased to announce the addition of fifteen additional Electronic Goods Recycling Containers throughout the State. Five additional drop-off locations have been added in each county. With this addition DSWA now has 24 locations for residents of Delaware to recycle their electronic goods. The drop-off program, which started in 2001, is designed to accept electronic goods, telecommunications equipment, toys, radios, televisions, electroacoustic equipment, calculators, computers and their parts, keyboards, printers, cables, phones, fax machines, answering machines, and VCRs. Since the inception of DSWA’s Electronic Goods Recycling Program, there have been more fifteen million pounds of electronic material kept out of the landfills. Education is a very important part of DSWA’s mission, and in keeping with that mission DSWA has schedule three workshops that will are intended to educate the public about the Electronic Goods Recycling Program. The workshops have been schedule for the following dates:

• New Castle County- University of Delaware Clayton Hall, August 12th at 6pm
• Kent County- Del-Tech Terry Campus, September 9th at 6pm.
• Sussex County-Del-Tech Owens Campus, October 7th at 6pm.

2008 Earth Day Festival Winners

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority hosted the annual Trash Can Dan and the Clean Up Kids drawing at this year’s Earth Day Festival. This year’s winners were Don Migala of Felton, DE who won first place prize and received a new computer. Sabryna Nosher of Milford, DE who won second place prize and received a bicycle and helmet. Torey Phillipson of Camden, DE who won third place and received a $50.00 gift certificate to Atlantic Book Warehouse. Three DSWA Drivers named Semi-Finalists in National Competition

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is proud to announce that three of its Curbside Recycling Technicians have been named semi-finalists in the Environmental Industry Association (EIA) 2008 Driver of the Year Competition. The drivers, Darren Austin, Michael O'Connor, and Darrin Johnson were named semi-finalists in the competition that drew more than 125,000 nominees from across the United States and Canada. The competition examined each nominee’s driving and accident record along with information about the driver’s duties and number of route assignments. Darren Austin and Michael O'Connor work as Curbside Recycling Technicians responsible for the collection of recyclable material from DSWA’s Statewide Curbside Recycling Program. Darrin Johnson is employed by DSWA, as a Truck Operator responsible for transporting recyclable material to other facilities. DSWA is proud to employ such wonderful employees and is pleased to have their accomplishments recognized.

DSWA visits Blue Mountain Recycling Facility with Delaware Legislators

On April 29, 2008 State of Delaware House Representative Robert Valihura and Representative Deborah Hudson toured the Blue Mountain Recycling Facility in Philadelphia, PA with Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) Chief Executive Officer, Pasquale S. Canzano and Chief Operating Officer, Richard P. Watson. The Blue Mountain Recycling Facility receives Single Steam Recyclable Materials from DSWA, the City of Wilmington, the City of Philadelphia and others. The City of Wilmington delivers its single stream recyclables to DSWA's Delaware Recycling Center located at Pigeon Point for transfer to Blue Mountain's facility. DSWA under an agreement with Blue Mountain then transfers The City of Wilmington single stream recyclables to Blue Mountain. The materials are then separated using both mechanical and hand sorting methods. The separated materials accepted at Blue Mountain include but are not limited to cardboard, paper, several individual plastic streams, steel cans, aluminum cans and crushed glass.

These materials are then sold to their respective markets where they take the place of virgin natural resources in the manufacture of new products.

The trip proved to be very informative and educational. Representatives Valihura and Hudson have been champions of seeking ways to increase Recycling in Delaware. Representative Valihura was a main sponsor of House Bill 159, which passed on May 7, 2008. The bill would establish a Recycling Fund for DNREC to provide recycling grants to the public and private sectors.The bill now awaits action in the Senate./

Smyrna Town Hall Drop-Off Center Being Removed

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) will be removing the drop-off center located at the Smyrna Town Hall by May 7, 2008. The site will be removed due to construction in the parking lot. This is one of DSWA’s oldest sites, which was started in January 2001. Residents will be able to take their recycling to the drop-off center located at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill off of Sunnyside Road in Smyrna. DSWA’s Senior Manager of Recycling, Rich Von Stetten, said, “We are disheartened to lose this center, it was a valuable site to us and the residents of Smyrna.” If there are any shopping centers or business owners who are interested in sponsoring a drop-off center at their site, please contact Rich Von Stetten at 800-404-7080.

DSWA and Town of Millville enter recycling partnership

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is pleased to be partnering with the Town of Millville to provide residents with a voluntary single stream curbside recycling program. Participants will receive a 95-gallon cart on wheels for the collection of narrow-neck plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, aluminum, steel and empty aerosol cans, newspapers, junk mail, corrugated cardboard, paperboard and clear, brown and green glass containers. Collection will begin in May and participants will receive every other week pick up by the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. Residents who are interested in signing up for the program can call the Town of Millville office at 302-539-0449.

On March 15, after 15 years of service to the Millville area, DSWA was asked to remove its Recycling Drop-Off Center from the Masonic Lodge on Rt. 26. It was with regret that DSWA removed the popular center, however the Lodge has been a faithful recycling sponsor to local residents. The Millville Recycling Center generated an average of 85,000 lbs of recyclable material each month. Currently, in addition to the new curbside recycling agreement, DSWA and the Town of Millville are searching for an alternate Drop-Off Center in the local vicinity. DSWA’s Sr. Manager of Statewide Recycling Rich Von Stetten said, "DSWA is extremely pleased to be signing the curbside recycling agreement with the town of Millville. Both the town and DSWA hope that this move will help the citizens of Millville continue on recycling as they have been accustomed to over the last 15 years".

DSWA receives Goodwill's 2007 Business Partner of the Year Award

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) has been chosen as the Goodwill 2007 Business Partner of the Year. Goodwill Industries presents this award to a business that helps support the Goodwill mission to improve the lives of people with barriers through the power of work. DSWA and Goodwill Industries have had a longstanding partnership through recycling. The recycling drop-off center at the new Goodwill store in Bridgeville, Delaware is the most recent addition to the program. They also continue to work together with the Electronic Good Recycling program in which DSWA will take any unsold electronic items from Goodwill to be recycled. Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control opens third yard waste drop-off site in Brandywine Hundred

The Brandywine Hundred Community yard waste site opened Friday, Feb. 15 for residential yard waste, including all plant materials resulting from lawn maintenance and landscaping activities. The new site, located on the north side of Cauffiel Parkway, approximately 100 yards east of the Cauffiel Parkway and Philadelphia Pike (Business Route 13) intersection, serves as a cost-free and convenient option for residents to comply with the northern New Castle County yard waste ban.

The Brandywine Hundred site is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and is for use by New Castle County residents only. Commercial businesses, such as landscaping and lawn care companies, as well as municipalities are not eligible. Only loose material can be left; plastic bags and other containers must be emptied and removed from the site. Instructional signs are posted on-site.

Yard waste will be periodically ground into useable landscape mulch, and New Castle County residents can pick up free mulch when it is available. Mulch benefits plants and the soil by conserving moisture, impeding weed growth and increasing the soil’s organic content. Mulching also reduces the need for costly chemical herbicides and fertilizers.

Yard waste makes up a large percentage of the residential waste that goes into landfills. These organic materials include grass clippings, leaves, prunings, brush, shrubs, garden materials, Christmas trees and tree limbs up to four inches in diameter. Keeping yard waste out of landfills by recycling and composting extends the life of the landfill and promotes sustainability.

On Jan. 24, 2008 the New Castle County ban on yard waste went into effect, prohibiting all yard waste materials from being disposed or mixed in with other household trash going to the Cherry Island Landfill.

Residents are required to dispose of yard waste through an alternative method – drop it off at one of DNREC’s free yard waste drop-off sites; use a mulching mower or compost it; have it hauled away by a private hauler, landscaper, or the Delaware Solid Waste Authority for recycling; or take it to one of the commercial facilities available in New Castle County.

In July 2007, DNREC opened the DART Mid-County Community Yard Waste Demonstration Site at the southwest corner of U.S. Rt. 13 and Rt. 72 near Bear. In early November, another site, the Polly Drummond Hill Community Yard Waste Demonstration Site, ½ mile north of Kirkwood Highway and directly across from the Judge Morris Estate, was opened. These sites are open daily from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

On May 23, 2007, Governor Ruth Ann Minner signed Senate Joint Resolution 2 that directed the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority to work with partners to open and operate at least three community yard waste sites. The Brandywine Hundred site, the third drop-off site in New Castle County, completes the requirement.

Information on the Brandywine Hundred Community Yard Waste Demonstration Site will be available on DNREC’s website, www.dnrec.delaware.gov beginning on Friday, Feb. 15.

New Chief of Facilities

Mr. Logan V. Miller, P.E., BCEE has been appointed the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s (DSWA) Chief of Facilities Management. Mr. Miller will begin his new position on February 25, 2008 at the Dover Administration office. DSWA’s Chief Operating Officer, Rick Watson said, “ We are looking forward to having Logan as a part of our Executive Management team to help guide the Authority into the future.” Mr. Miller received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Wesley College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technologies and Technical Management from the University of Delaware. He has been employed at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority since 1986. He has served as a Facility Manager for DSWA’s Sandtown Landfill, Pine Tree Corners Transfer Station, and Milford Transfer Station since 1997. As Facility Manager, Mr. Miller was responsible for overseeing facility operations and facility personnel. Mr. Miller is a Professional Engineer in Delaware and a Board Certified Environmental Engineer with the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. In his new position, he will oversee the management of all DSWA operating facilities. When asked about his new position, Mr. Miller said, “Working at the DSWA is truly a fantastic opportunity to work with a talented group of people. I look forward to working together to meet the many challenges that await us in this ever changing business.”

DSWA lends a hand to ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) is proud to be taking part in ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. This week, a Wilmington, Delaware family was given the surprise of a lifetime from the hit ABC show. The family learned that they and their next-door neighbor would be receiving Extreme Home Makeovers. Anderson Homes, a Middletown, Delaware based company has been selected to be the builder for the homes.

DSWA is working together with Waste Management and Philadelphia based Burns Container Service to recycle construction and demolition debris (C&D) from the site. Waste Management will deliver clean C&D to DSWA’s Cherry Island Landfill located on East 12th Street in Wilmington. DSWA will load the C&D debris into trailers provided by Burns and transport the material to their recycling facility in Philadelphia. Burns will recover metals and other materials and grind the balance of the C&D to produce a cover material called ‘Barrier’. DSWA will use the Barrier as an alternate daily cover on the landfill. By recycling the C&D and using it as alternate daily cover, DSWA is preserving landfill space and replacing virgin soil to conserve our natural resources. DSWA Chief Executive Officer, Pasquale S. Canzano said, “This represents the ultimate spirit of cooperation between the public and private sectors for the benefit of the community and to greatly enhance the lives of deserving families”.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which has won back-to-back Emmy Awards as Best Reality Program (non-competitive), is in its 5th season on ABC. The program is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. Denise Cramsey is the executive producer; and David Goldberg is the president of Endemol USA. DSWA Launches New Website

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority is excited to announce the launching of its new website. The new site is being launched Friday, February 1, 2008. DSWA hopes that Delaware residents find this new site easy to navigate and full of useful information.

New Navigation Features

First and foremost is the new site wide navigation system. There are 3 main components to help you find your way around our new web site. On the left side is the blue "Main Navigation Menu. " This is virtually a complete site map, containing links to most of the pages in the site organized into appropriate categories. The top level (blue) links take you to "home" pages for each category with general information and from there you can navigate to subpages in that section with more detailed content. You can also jump to subpages in any category via the new flyout menus you will see when you mouseover the top level blue category links.

On the right hand side of all pages you will see a yellow column, we call the "Quick Links Menu" with direct links to some of the most visited and requested pages and information. We've also included some links to brand new pages here as well. This is where to look first for what's new and what's commonly requested. We plan to update this regularly as new information is added and as user requests require.

At the very top right corner of every page is the Contact Us and Search group of links. You can always get back to the Home page from here or by clicking the DSWA Logo on the top left of all pages. You can e-mail DSWA or look up specific contact information, map links and operating hours for any of our facilities on the Contact page. You can use the search form to find specific key words throughout the entire site. The Site Map will show you a complete outline of the site with links to all pages, like a permanently expanded version of the Main Navigation Bar.

Expanded Content

We've also greatly expanded our content on the new web site with a News Section and an Online Store.

The top latest few stories will be featured with a "teaser" on the home page with links to the full articles on the Main News Page. You can click on the "more»" link at the end of each home page news blurb to jump right to the rest of that full story or just click the Main Menu-News, Notices & Events link and browse the whole news page. All news items also link to a print-friendly version. Press releases are archived on the Press Release page.

At the Online Store you can purchase Yard Waste Stickers, Collection Station Tickets and Sign Up or Renew Curbside Recycling Service. We plan on adding much more in the year to come!

To that end Stan has built an extensive backend content management system so our staff in various departments can update data much more efficiently.
