This Autumn the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) helped the University of Delaware launch a pilot Single-Stream Recycling Program on the Laird and South Campuses. The University distributed over 2200 smaller recycling bins and over 200 hallway recycling carts to these campuses. They also launched the Game Day Recycling Program with DSWA’s single-stream recycling carts in the parking lots during home games. Just in the first five home games they have collected 19,840 pounds of recyclables. Their parking volunteers pass out one trash bag and one recycling bag to encourage tailgaters to recycle. Then the grounds crew collects the materials and bring them to DSWA’s Recycling Center in New Castle. Drew Knab, Business and Project Analyst, from the Office of the Executive Vice President of the University, said “DSWA was instrumental in guiding us with what to do to begin this program. The University is anxious to expand the recycling program across campus.” The University is expecting to expand this single-stream recycling program across campus in the Fall of 2009. Along with the University’s recycling efforts, DSWA still has four single-stream recycling drop-off centers throughout the campus. Both students on campus and residents in the area are able to bring their recycling to these drop-off centers at no cost. Rich Von Stetten, Senior Manager of Recycling at DSWA said, “It has been a pleasure to deal with the University’s administration. We are happy that the program has done so well and we look forward to working with them in the future.” For more information on this or any of DSWA’s programs, call the Citizens’ Response Line at 1-800-404-7080 or visit www.dswa.com.
