On Tuesday, May 18 at the Annual American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Delaware Section Awards Banquet, Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s (DSWA) Cherry Island Landfill expansion and enhancement project was awarded the 2010 ASCE Project of the Year. The project was highlighted by the ASCE for its cost-effective and “green” design and construction efforts used to provide additional landfill capacity. This includes the installation of a 60-foot high mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) berm that extends nearly 2 miles, making it one of the largest reinforced structures built over soft soils in the United States. Present to accept the award and to provide a presentation on the project were Lynsey Kocenko, DSWA Project Manager, Thomas Gard and Dave Santarosa of Sevenson Environmental, the construction contractor, and Thomas Ramsey of Geosyntec, the designer of the MSE berm. DSWA is honored to have its project recognized for this award and is proud to be partnering with such innovative companies on this unique project. For more information on the expansion project at the Cherry Island Landfill or any other information on DSWA will call the Citizens’ Response Line at 1-800-404-7080 or visit www.dswa.com.
