Eastside Blueprint Community organized a partnership with the City of Wilmington, Wilmington Police Department, Children and Families First, Recycle Bank, and Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) to bring information on safety, recycling, and anti-littering to the 4th and 5th grade students at the Eastside Community Schools, which is made up of Bancroft Elementary, Palmer Elementary, and Stubbs Elementary, all located in the City of Wilmington. The objective of the partnership was to give presentations at these schools on April 1, 2010 to bring awareness about the importance of taking care of the environment and keeping their community clean as well as safe. The presentation is just the beginning of a partnership that emphasizes how businesses and the community can work together for a common goal. DSWA Public Information Coordinator, Sarah Burns, gave a presentation at each school about DSWA’s facilities as well the importance of recycling and keeping litter off the ground. Following her presentation, City of Wilmington Councilman, Bud Freel, talked with the students about a new adopt-a-block initiative that the 5th grade students at each school will take on. The program will have the 5th grade students at each school adopting the block around their school and providing clean ups of the area four times a year. The Wilmington police spoke on the importance of safety in the community and focused on the problem of bullying that they see both in school and out of school with the popularity of social media sites like facebook. The day was a great success and the organizers hope the students took away information that they can use to make their community a better place.
